What about the CHILDREN ? [by Anonymous Citizen on October 5, 2008] about 2007 Senate Bill 5071 (Concerning visitation rights for grandparents.) My daughter and grandaughter moved in with me when my grangaughter was a small baby. I have always been in my grandaughter's life. I have paid for 95% of all expenses for this child. Her mother can not hold a job. Father in jail for drugs. I supported her mother as a stay at home mom for the best care for the child. We made an agreement that I would play the second parent role give up my relationship and change my job to do this. My daughter agreed for the sake of the child not to ever take her out of my life. At 4 years old her mother went on a 9 month drug speee left the child with me unless I was at work. I started a child protection case, but could not get enough evidence before she broke up with that man. Over the years she has used my grandaughter as A tool to get what she wanted. I held out as long as I could, 7 years. BAD mother found A new man turned on me and the rest of the family moved my grandaughter out. She cut her off . The child has gone from A grandmother that devoted my life to her. She lived in A 4 bedroom house on the beach, ballet, panio, bowling, scoocer, nice clothes and lots and lots of love. Now she has changed school because her non-working mother can't get out of bed to drive her three blocks to the bus. no ballet, no scoocer, no bowling, no swiming, she lives behind a curtian pulled across a living room. She has gained 15-20 pounds and has no new school clothes. My daughter and her man have enough money daily for cigarettes wiskey and drugs. Before her mother took her away my grandaughter begged me crying not to let her take her. I SAY WHAT ABOUT THE CHILDRENS RIGHTS ? THE LAWS PROTECT THE RIGHTS OF THE MOTHER, LIKE SHE IS MATURE ENOUGH TO PUT THE CHILD BEFORE HERSELF! I promised my grandaughter I will never give up.I have spent 7 thousand and been trying for 5 months and I'am not much closer than when I started. Okay. Could we please be clear here? If a patient is provided a nebulizer and their insurance is billed for it, is it taxed? Who is responsible for paying the tax? What about rentals of them? Furthermore, there are similar cases, in Washington, that this rule did not apply, so why in this one? There should be a law that allows visitation for grandparents within reason. The person who wrote the response about immaturity and the parents showing they are the controller is correct. If you are hurting the children and the other grandparent because you need to show that you and/or the new partner are now the rulers, it is not OK. Too many innocent people get hurt. My grandkids are going to grow up thinking everyone they love leaves, just because of a parents selfishness. The mother (my daughter) doesn't come around and the father and his new girlfriend say I can't. They have told me I can't. The last time I saw my grandbabies, they asked "why can't we see you more? Why can't we stay the night Nana? Why don't you call us? Why can't we go to the park with you anymore? What I am I suppose to tell them? How heartbreaking for us all. Who really gets hurt here? This is not right!! I have never in my life had an event leave such a sad mark across my heart. I never had the privilege to meet Randy but I have met some of his family. The pain and misery that has been bestowed upon them is something that could have been prevented!! The crime itself is awful but to let the accomplices get off scott-free is even more awful!!! First of all, they are not children!!! They were 19 and 21! Last I checked the law states the individuals are "of age" at 18. The courts will charge defendants that are below the 18 age on any other crimes, so why have they chosen to ignore this crime? Justice was never served upon Randy and it is high time that the state recognize this and do something about it!! I am an ABSOLUTE support in this bill and pray every night that it will pass! If in the event that the state refuses this bill, we must all rely on our strength in each other and God to uphold the memory of Randy. I met them yesterday in Olympia at the Day of Remembrance and stand even more angered today. As an adult if you commit a crime you should be held accountable for your actions. At that age you should know right from wrong, not get away with it because she is your mother. I support this law in every way. Place the responsibility on adults, legal age eighteen; who assist in disposing evidence after a parent commits murder. This law in its inception was intended to protect minors under the age of eighteen; not nineteen and twenty one year old adults. Please realize the step-children involved in this crime deceived, lied and misled the detectives tasked to uncover the details of this crime. They had numerous opportunities to assist the detectives with this murder and chose to mislead it. This in my opinion was a conscious effort on their part not to protect their mother; but to protect themselves from prosecution. This loophole is a serious travesty of justice for families throughout Washington State. Please don’t add to our burden by allowing adults children involved in deposing of evidence to walk free among law abiding citizens of Washington State. The step-children don’t deserve to have the same rights as we do. They broke the law and because of a loophole their free. We’ve been horrifically victimized by Randy’s murder in ways you will never imagine. We can’t go shopping at local establishments; we can’t eat at local restaurants. Because we have on numerous occasions come face to face with the step-children involved in covering up this horrendous crime. They’re going about their daily lives with their children without guilt or embarrassment for what they did to Randy Ferguson; their step-father. Their participation with this crime was a sick, dishonest, heartless and inexcusable. They assisted in covering up the murder of their step-father who loved them unconditionally. I miss my brother-in-law Randy with all that I have; I miss talking with my brother, I miss his laugh at Sunday dinner. I miss hugging and telling him I love him; it’s not the big things I miss. We are working on utilizing greener technologies for energy production. Please research the impacts of plastic and PVC manufacturing plants on the workers who are exposed to these chemicals on a daily basis. And the communities around them, and the communities down wind. The documentary "Blue Vinyl", directed by Daniel B. Gold and Judith Helfand, covers the history and life-cycle of PVC. Please also research the "North Pacific Gyre" aka the "Garbage Patch". This is a plastic soup twice the size of Texas that has accumulated plastic trash from around the world. Plastic never goes away. It breaks down into microscopic particles. Plankton feeders consume these. Tests have shown that there are 6 times more plastic than plankton in the "Garbage Patch". Small fish consume these particles mistaking them for food, then larger fish eat those fish, and then we consume those fish. The chemicals in plastics cause cancer, birth defects, sterilization to humans. Birds eat larger pieces of plastic mistaking it for safe food and then die of suffocation, etc. Please think again about the real impacts plastic has made on us and our world. I never would have thought that anyone could be given a slap on the wrist after being involved with and covering up a murder simply because of their relation to the murderer. At what age are children required to take responsibility for their actions? In all other aspects of the law children become responsible for their actions at age 18, but not when involved in a murder as long as the murderer is your mother. What kind of message is this sending? Unfortunately, it is too late for the Ferguson family to get the justice that Randy Ferguson deserved, but it is not too late for other families like them who will have to go through this heartache in the future. Please pass this law and send a new message, the right message. No matter the relation, being involved in a murder will be punishable with the full extent of the law. If you commit a crime you deserve to get full punishment regardless of your relationship to the victim or others committing the crime. If you are a minor under the age of 18 and were cohersed into committing a crime then yes you should be protected by the House Bill 2868 "Randy's Law"! Every adult (age 18) needs to be held responsible for their own actions. If commit you pay!!! All children know how to say No for everything else in life; so being cohersed into a crime can easily be walked away from helping commit. These are two competent adults who should have had their day in court. It should not matter if they were related or not. These two individuals knew what their mother did was wrong and not only did they help her but they lied to police to cover it up. If we allow such an injustice to continue what kind of precedence are we setting for the youth in this state? This is a loophole that needs to be fixed. Parents always think their children will never die before them. Sometimes, there is no choice because of illness. This however was an act of hate that took their son from them. Randy's wife was the one with so much hate she convinced her adult children to help her. She has been held accountable for his death but her grown children have not been held accountable for their part in the murder of Randy. The law states because they were the children of the murderer they cannot be held liable for their part. How foolish is this law!! I believe this is wrong. The way the law is written it says the children were influenced by the mother there for they are not held accountable. These children were 19 and 21 years old and if it was anyone else not a relative we would be looking at several years in prison. It should not matter if you are related to the killer. Hold them accountable. I am raising my brothers only little girl whom was in the house at the time of the murder. She dosent understand why they are not in jail too. They should be. She was 4 years old at the time. What are we saying that if your mother murders and you assist her its ok because she was your mother? At age 18 you vote, you drive a car you can fight in a war and in any other crime you would be held accountable.This law needs to be passed. One of the children helped stuff my brothers 280 pound body in the trunk of a car and they both destroyed evidence and lied to the police for 6 days.They helped clean a murder scene and just did things that should be punishable by the law. To know that they are just walking in the world not being held responsible for there part is an additional pain to have to deal with. Chase has proposed a ban starting in 2010. That gives the manufacturers several years to come up with another option- corn-based for example. Unfortunately people are too lazy to recycle all their bottles- take one look at the garage cans at the stadium after a game. Eight out of 10 plastic water bottles become landfill waste (earth911.org). Next it might be Styrofoam- which we should be avoiding like the plaque. American is *quite* behind in getting green. Plastic bottles and packages, as far as I understand it technically, have been actually saving energy and friendlier to the landfills compared to alternative packaging which they replace. Glass and aluminum bottles, for example, have much higher impact on the use of energy and landfills. Can you melt plastic with a match? Try doing that on glass. I cannot think of a single alternative packaging which presents less impact on environment than plastics. The corn based bottles have a potential once the technology gets perfected.. i.e. reliable shelf life, etc. The real focus should be education on recycling. Banning something because it is easy to do politically often has the opposite effect in real life. This type of short-sightedness is unfortunate part of our political thinking process. With these players only wager a few cents or a dollar at a time. In real casinos you might pay a minimum of $10 to $20 just to get into a hand! So, in conclusion, I think you have shown very little understanding of this subject by commending this law. Safety - MC and Auto [by Anonymous Citizen on July 14, 2008] about 2005 House Bill 1176 (Allowing motorcycles between lanes during congestion) Having grown up and learning to drive (and ride) in California, I have a little experience on the topic of lane-splitting I can share.. First the joke "if you can't do 70mph bumper-to-bumper you got no business on the freeway" is not really a joke. A motorcycle sandwiched between two cars is ugly at any speed, but the problem is the one behind suddenly going significantly faster than the one in front. Lane splitting isn't about reducing commute time, it's about safety. CHP statistics have shown for years their motorcycles were involved in fewer accidents, and those accidents were less severe, if they were "lane splitting" rather than riding in the lanes. My own experience echo's that.. I've been hit from behind in traffic by folks not paying attention, where the only altercation I ever had in between the lanes was by some fortunate fool trying to take me out. (I say "fortunate fool", as the third bike behind me in the line was a CHP motorcycle officer, the fool part was his window was down and I ended up halfway in his car ready to break his neck, I say fortunate because the officer stopped me from killing him and instead arrested *him* for attempted vehicular homicide.. he got off light considering) Given that there's a whole lot more "cage" drivers out there totally oblivious to other vehicles around them (never mind motorcycles) my odds are much worse with them behind me in a lane (and we didn't have cell phones and ipods back then!) than up ahead crawling along in traffic. I learned to ride bikes by riding in the dirt. I learned about people by riding bikes in traffic. I learned there is no such thing as an unavoidable accident on a motorcycle, and after 40 years riding I can honestly say I know what the people ahead are going to do often before they do.. rule #1 on motorcycles is never be surprised.. I expect people to turn in front of me, open their doors on side streets, run red lights.. I always leave plenty of escape-room ahead at a stop and have both eyes locked on the car coming up behind me.. I've driven out of 3 rear-end accidents that way (they still happened, I just wasn't in the middle of it - I escaped IN BETWEEN THE LANES!). While lane-splitting, you've got one eye on the rear-view mirrors of drivers ahead, looking for that glance, the quick head-turn.. I can see what's behind them and their opportunities in the flow of traffic much better than they can - I know if (s)he is looking to bolt to the next lane, has room to speed up, is drifting left or right.. and can adjust accordingly. I can't do squat about the knucklehead behind me checking the next lane for clearance or wiping up the latte (s)he just spilled on her faux-leather seat and oblivious that the traffic ahead is stopping, who never even sees that motorcycle disappearing under his or her hood ornament. I'd also like to avoid the "unsafe driving" and "following too close" tickets I got two years ago when I had to jump between the lanes getting off I-90 in Issaquah to avoid being the meat in a motorcycle sandwich developing as traffic rapidly accordianed back up onto the freeway. Not gonna argue with the young WSP officer over what was safer to do and what he thought he saw from a mile back or why being forced to stay in the lane caused the "following too close" in the first place. Cheaper to just pay the stupid things than what it would have cost me in lost wages fighting it. First ticket on a motorcycle for me since 1974. Shorter commute time? Not the issue. Better gas milage on a motorcycle? That's not a factor really, although stopped in traffic, everybody's gas milage is 0 mpg, motorcycles included. It's safety. Contrary to gut feelings, lane-splitting is safer. Motorcyclists: it's spooky when you first start doing this, and you better have more than just 3 months (maybe even a couple years) experience riding your bike before you do this even if it becomes legal, because it demands control, judgement and attentiveness that you don't get just putting around on weekends. You need to be "zen" with the traffic flow. Cage drivers: Don't be freaking out with that motorcycle coming up along side you, and don't complain about them passing you while you're stuck in traffic. The last thing you want is my Harley sitting along side you for any period of time in traffic.. you won't be able to hear the person you're talking to on the cell phone. There are some that use the system to file false charges against the parent ending up in the children being put in foster care even after the parent went out of the way for the grandmother to see the children. The Parent had to file contempt of court charges to get them returned just to have the grandmother file more abuse charges. Does a caring grandparent subject the child to what needs to be accomplished to file an abuse charge? By the way the parent was found not guilty of the charges.... Now the grandparent still pushes in court battles. Most all parents want the child to have a relationship with grandparents. As a fully legal, permanent resident of this country, and having recently moved to this state I am horrified to find out that I cannot pursue my favorite sport without a piece of paper which is impossible to get (and which I would get if it were possible, despite it being a farce). I have been fingerprinted, background checked, measured, interviewd and checked for diseases to find even the tiniest issue with my character in order to achieve my permanent residency - in short I'm as upstanding a person as you're likely to meet and I'll be applying for citizenship in a few years when I qualify, at which point I shall pursue a place on the US Olympic shooting team. With any sense of legal decency the law will be struck down after today's ruling by the Supreme Court - permanent residents have constitutional rights unless federal law explicitly excludes them from a specific clause. I believe that grandchildren are often used as the pawns in a concerted effort to wield power and control over grandparents by emotionally immature parents. In most cases, children are being denied the right to visit a grandparent not out of love or concern for the child, but out of vindictiveness by a parent. Most people play poker or gamble online and sometimes its not even real money its just for play and now they wont even lets us gamble with fake money. They let people gamble real money on horse races and in actual casinos but we cant play online. We should have a freedom to play wherever and whenever we want and for our own entertainment not even for real money. What should we use to line our garbage cans? Why can't we use those biodegradable plastic bags? I just check online. 500 biodegradable plastic grocery bags cost only $78.65. So that's like $0.16 each. If the supermarkets charges us for plastic bags, those bags better be biodegradable. Otherwise, why would I pay for something that's bad for our environment? If people are going to gamble they will gamble, even in Utah (where casinos and gambling is illegal) people drive a few hours sometimes every weekend to gamble in Wendover Nevada. I have never heard of anyone complaining of the casino being so far away because the majority of people that go don't come back with more money than when they started. The reason why this law is so commendable is because it helps reduce the temptation of gambling more often than usual. In the 1970’s the earth was on the verge of a “Global Ice age” and swarms of ‘knowledgeable’ scientists, some who are still pontificating today on the warming craze, flocked to agree and predict the frozen demise of the earth and all because of mankind and our negative impact on the environment. Just as quick to swarm, were the politicians with their incessant drooling and endeavors to get their hands deeper in our pockets with tax after tax all touted to be able to correct man’s impact on the weather. Then comes your Global Warming idiocy; and this time, our Carbon Footprint is to blame. Isn’t it interesting how every time, it’s the big brother government who offers the path to salvation, all for a ‘miniscule’ increase in taxes, regulations, and restrictions on the capital market. Lots of money to be made on this, (and the next) ‘taxable’ calamity they can brain wash you and your ilk into believing is caused by whatever. Even more money to be made by scaring the wits out of fools like you so you can dig your hand deeper into your pockets and dole out more tax money to fix another ‘scary’ problem that the almighty government promises to fix by coming to the rescue with taxes. What are they going to buy with that money? Why carbon credits of course! Then they can strike a bargain with ole mother nature, Satan, or whoever else pops up with a promise of salvation from the looming, man-made weather disaster. The saddest point here, is that the vast hordes of sheep falling onto the bandwagon of Greenhouse gases and carbon footprints don’t even realize just how stooopid they sound. Bend over fool, I’ll give you a carbon footprint right in your “posterior rumpus endus” where you store your brain! Notice now, how the story changes as science figures out that the world isn’t actually warming. Now, “Global Warming” has morphed into “Climate Change”…The next politically correct buzzword to frighten the witless out of more tax money. There is just one other problem. Although it's obvious that thousands of scientists from multiple disciplines throughout the world couldn't be wrong, it now seems that they are. This is not the rant of some oil industry paid-for study, but the admission by none other than Rajendra Pachauri, the head of the IPCC, which represents over 2,500 environmental and climatological scientists. It seems that, sadly, facts are stubborn little things that won't go away, and scientific measurement is far more accurate than man-made computer projections and theories. The problem began with a long awaited set of studies of precise global ocean temperatures made by over 3000 buoys, combined with atmospheric measurements from no less than 8 orbiting NASA satellites. Our expectation was that this would really end the debate. The discussion would simply debate "just how bad is it?". It didn't turn out that way. All of the instrumentation said the opposite. Global warming had inexplicably stopped, and the earth has been cooling slightly since the late 1990's and will continue to do so for at least the next 10 to 15 years. Impossible, you say? Well it seems that global warming researchers, while taken aback at the data, are still scientists. And scientists, while sometimes led astray, tend to stick with science, not political correctness or popular opinion. That's the reason why the conclusions were not found by NASA or the Bush administration, by Exxon or by anti-global-warming forces, but by climate scientists themselves. A team led by none other than uber climate researcher Noel Keenlyside, supported by the UN's climate data analysis systems came to that conclusion. Faced with overwhelming evidence, Rajendra Pachauri admitted to Reuters earlier this year that there had been no global warming at any time in this century. So does that mean that global warming was just a fantasy? Of course is isn't. That there's no need to reduce our carbon footprint? Absolutely not. But with American families reeling from 4 dollar gasoline that will just go higher, and a carbon footprint that punishes the most advanced nations while rewarding the worst polluters, it's time to take a common sense pause from this fanatical "they sky is burning" panic. It's time to plan a strategy that will work, not punish. Let's begin with an idea I have to credit to columnist Charles Krauthammer who suggested that we adjust our gas tax to keep fuel at 4 dollars per gallon. That number seems to be the magic level that is effectively pushing Americans into smaller, more fuel efficient cars and reducing overall motor vehicle use. Voluntarily. Without government mandates. If we impose a similar tax on coal and natural gas, we'll find that home and office energy efficiency will be at the top of everyone's list. That tax money can then be mandated for use in alternative energy research and development. Let's demand that the developing nations, including China and India place carbon emission reduction at the top of their national agendas as well. That alone will contribute substantially to a reduction in greenhouse emissions. And let's put some teeth behind that. While a tax on polluting Chinese goods may have other repercussions, we shouldn't allow other nations to blatantly despoil the atmosphere while we continue to fund their filthy manufacturing plants and punish our own families in the process. Finally, let's get serious about alternative energy. Global warming isn't the problem. Oil and coal are. If we recognize that, and spend the money we're now wasting on politically correct half-hearted fixes, we'll have solutions that work. Not mindless ethanol, but real alternative energy that will stop the flow of oil and coal and in turn will take care of carbon emissions without artificial legislative mandates and partisan politics. We've been given a break. Those who choose to accept science will see the window of opportunity to do this right for a change. Those who bury their head in the (warming) sand will live to see a nation still arguing over global warming, and suffering from ongoing draconian curbs 20 years from now. Seize the opportunity created by this global cool off. It may not last, but it has given us the chance to change our world in an effective, intelligent way. Let's not blow it this time.
